Principles in making a Double-In-A-Crowd:

bullet

Everyone is bidding and in no way can the double be mistaken as Support, Responsive, Maximal, Negative or Balancing Takeout.

bullet

The double shows values.

bullet

Does not have length or high cards in opponent's suits.

Example:

You hold:

543   AKT6   K54   QT5

The bidding goes:

[ 1D  Pass  1H  1S ] : [ 2C  3S  Dbl.....

This double says:

  1. You have a good hand without trump tricks in opponent's suit.

  2. Combined with a good hand in HCP.

  3. Without a clear bid to make.

Note: Partner now has many options including passing to convert the double into a penalty double.
