Responsive Double

Similar to negative doubles, only the opponents have begun the auction.

Opponents must open and respond with the same suit.

Partner either makes a takeout double or overcall

Note: Some partnerships do not play Responsive Doubles if partner overcalls, must be takeout double only after the opening bid.

 

Example (partner makes a takeout double):

[ 1C  Double  2C or 3C  Double.....

You are showing the majors and are asking partner to pick one.

Example (partner overcalls):

[ 1D  1H  2D or 3D  Double.....

You are showing clubs and spades.

Note: The level the responsive double is used is a partnership understanding. Most play responsive doubles through 4D. A double above the agreed upon level is for penalty.
