First opportunity to discard. Usually played only against notrump contracts. Some partnerships use it also against suit contracts. Similar to Odd/Even. To indicate what suit you like.

Discarding a low card shows preference for the lower-ranking side suit.

Discarding a high card shows preference for the higher ranking side suit.
