When holding a "strong" opening 4H or 4S-type hand, the opener bids 4C (transfer to Hearts) or 4D (transfer to Spades).  This method allows partner to explore slam if holding sufficient "quick tricks".

Holding a "Strong" 4H or 4S Opening Hand

bullet

A "strong" hand contains 7 1/2 to 8 1/2 playing tricks with usually an outside A or K.

bullet

Open 4D with AKQ7543_9_AJ26_8 (you have 8 playing tricks)

Holding a "Weak" 4H or 4S Opening Hand

bullet

A"weak" holding is one that doesn't meet the above criteria.

bullet

Directly open 4H with 3_AQJ86432_92_74 (you only have 7 playing tricks)

Some partnerships bid Namyats the opposite way: 4C or 4D are transfers when holding "weak" 4-bids; Direct 4H or 4S show "strong" 4-bids.
