A defensive convention for use against an enemy 1NT. Requires 10 or more points.

 

 

The conventional overcalls of 1NT promise the next-higher suit OR the next two suits:

or, hearts and spades

2D:
bullet

bullet

or, spades and clubs

bullet

2H:
bullet

bullet

or, clubs and diamonds

bullet

2S:
bullet

bullet

or, diamonds and hearts

 

Advancer usually corrects to the anchor suit unless he has a very good suit of his own. If overcaller then bids the next higher suit, he is showing a two-suiter.

 

For example:

 

Overcaller has:  AK543   KJ985   3   42

Advancer has:   T83   52   Q983   AQ32

 

The bidding goes:  [ NT  2C  Pass  2D ] : [ Pass  2H  Pass  2S ]

 

2C = 10+ points with diamonds OR hearts and spades

2D = corrects to anchor suit

2H = clarifies that he has hearts and spades

2S = shows spade preference
